Glossary

Data leakage

Training on information that would not be available at prediction time, producing results too good to be true.

Leakage yields excellent validation scores and a model that fails immediately in production. It is the most common cause of a model that 'worked in testing'.

Strict temporal splits and a careful audit of every feature's availability are the defence.

The tell is a result that seems too good. A model that predicts churn with ninety-nine per cent accuracy is almost certainly reading a field that is only populated after the customer has already left, and the honest response is to go looking for it rather than to celebrate.

Split by time, not at random, whenever the prediction concerns the future. A random split lets the model learn from data that would not have existed yet, which is the most common way a leaked result survives review.

Related terms, in context

The concepts you almost always meet alongside data leakage.

Feature engineering
Constructing the input variables a model learns from, still where most predictive performance comes from.
Predictive analytics
Using historical data to forecast outcomes, demand, churn, risk, failure.
Evaluation
A labelled test set that turns 'it seems good' into a number you can regress against.

Where this shows up in our work

Data leakage is not an abstraction for us. It is a decision we make on live projects. It shows up most directly in predictive analytics & forecasting, where getting it wrong has a cost someone can measure.

If you are evaluating a vendor on this, the useful question is not whether they can define the term. It is what they measure, what they would refuse to do, and what happens in their system when the assumption behind data leakage stops holding.
