Why Apache Kafka for this
Big-bang migrations fail at a rate that should end the debate. We strangle the old system incrementally, keeping the business running the entire time.
Apache Kafka is strongest at throughput and durable replay of event history. For legacy system modernisation that matters because the failure modes of this kind of system tend to cluster exactly there.
The honest trade-off: significant operational complexity unless you are genuinely at streaming scale. We say that up front because a stack chosen for fashion rather than fit becomes someone's migration project two years later. Every engagement opens with a measurement: the cycle time, the cost per transaction, or the error rate we are being asked to move.
You own the code, the models where they are open-weight, and the documentation to run it without us.
The honest assessment
- What it is
- Distributed event streaming for high-throughput real-time pipelines.
- Strongest at
- throughput and durable replay of event history
- Trade-off
- significant operational complexity unless you are genuinely at streaming scale

We are not a reseller for Apache Kafka and hold no commission on this choice. Where a different option fits your workload better, the recommendation will say so. That is the entire value of asking us.
What is included
- Dependency and risk mapping of the existing system
- Incremental strangler-pattern migration plan
- Data migration with reconciliation at every step
- Parallel running until the new path is proven
- Rollback plan for every cutover
- Knowledge capture from the people who know the old system
Questions
Can we migrate without downtime?
Usually yes, with incremental migration and parallel running. Some database cutovers need a short window, which we plan and rehearse rather than improvise.
What if nobody understands the old system?
That is common and we treat it as the first work package, behaviour is reconstructed from code, logs and observed production traffic before anything is replaced.
How long does it take?
It depends entirely on scope, but incremental migration means value lands continuously rather than at the end of a multi-year programme.
