Glossary

AI agent

A system that plans a sequence of steps, calls tools, and changes state in real systems, rather than only producing text.

Also called
autonomous agent, agentic AI

An AI agent differs from a chatbot in one decisive way: it acts. Given a goal, it decides on a sequence of steps, calls tools or APIs to carry them out, observes what happened, and adjusts.

That capability is also the risk. Because an agent changes state in real systems, its permissions, approval gates and audit trail matter more than its raw reasoning quality.

Scope is what separates agents that ship from agents that demo. An agent given one workflow, a handful of tools and a clear definition of done will reach production; one given a broad goal and a large toolset will produce impressive transcripts and no deployable system.

Commonly misunderstood: Most products marketed as agents are workflows with a language model in one step. A real agent decides its own sequence; a workflow has the sequence decided for it.

Related terms, in context

The concepts you almost always meet alongside ai agent.

Tool calling
Letting a model invoke defined functions with structured arguments, so it can act rather than only describe.
Multi-agent system
Several specialised agents coordinating on a task, each with a narrow role and its own tools.
Human in the loop
Designed checkpoints where a person approves or corrects before the system acts.
Model Context Protocol
An open standard for exposing tools and data to AI assistants consistently across clients.

Where this shows up in our work

AI agent is not an abstraction for us. It is a decision we make on live projects. It shows up most directly in ai agent development, agentic workflow automation, where getting it wrong has a cost someone can measure.

If you are evaluating a vendor on this, the useful question is not whether they can define the term. It is what they measure, what they would refuse to do, and what happens in their system when the assumption behind ai agent stops holding.
